Driekwartblou Guesthouse

Driekwartblou is situated on the farm Schalkwykskraal on the banks of the Gariep Dam – the largest dam in South Africa.  This guesthouse has a 180° view of the Gariep Dam.  Eland, Wildebeest, Springbok and Zebra, to name but a few, comes right up to the Nature Reserve’s fence, a mere 50m from the guesthouse.

Schalkwykskraal is a working farm where Rubicon Merino’s and Nguni cattle are bred using a Holistic method.  A house that was built in the 1800’s was restored recently and divided into 4 modern units, of which 2 have self-catering option.  Every unit has a private entrance and steps out onto a large stoep where the views can be appreciated any time of day or night.  Spectacular sunrises and sunsets can be seen over the water of the dam.  Meals are served on your private stoep if weather permits.

Driekwartblou (meaning three quarters blue) got its name from the huge amount of blue that can be seen around the guest house in the form of water and air.  It is a unique oasis in the Karoo where guests get the chance to be near to nature without having to travel great distances.  We are situated 30km from the N1 (all tar roads) and halfway between Gauteng and Cape Town, making it the ideal stop-over going to the Argus or Two Oceans Marathon.  Driekwartblou is less than 2km from the R58 to Port Elizabeth and East London.

Units 1 and 2 have self-catering option
Units 2 and 3 can be connected, making it an ideal family room for 5 guests

Gariep Nature Reserve

Our Nature Reserve - The Gariep Nature Reserve is situated on the Northern shore of Lake Gariep, between the Gariep Airfield in the west and Bethulie in the east. It is about 200km from Bloemfontein and more or less halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The entrance to the reserve is approximately 8km from the N1 route. The reserve is just under 17700ha in size and is neighbored by private land owners, mostly small stock farmers. It is divided into two management sections of which the one part of 6000ha is fenced off with a game proof fence. This section is accessible to the public and provides a variety of game and birds for viewing. The other section is not accessible to the public and is mainly utilized as a breeding camp for some of the largest herds of springbok and black wildebeest in the Free State. The Gariep Nature Reserve was proclaimed in 1979 after the completion of the lake and is under the control of the Free State Provincial Government.

This reserve of contrasts with its multiple kopjes and rocky ridges are connected by planes and the vegetation varies from grasses, herbs, small to medium sized shrubs and a few single standing trees, typical of a dry karoo landscape. It is botanically classified as the Eastern Mixed Nama Karoo. The climate is also typical of the karoo with high summer and low winter temperatures. The annual rainfall varies between 300mm and 500mm per annum.

Gate entrance fee

The tariffs for 2013/14 are as follows:

Accommodation After the days outdoor activities visitors can find tranquility and relax at the rest camp where they can have a braai or a cooked supper in one of the 7 self catering chalets. There are three 4-bed chalets and four 6-bed chalets with a view on the lake and the islands. The chalets are equipped with bedding, crockery, cutlery, cookware, stove, refrigerator and a microwave oven. For those who rather prefer camping there is a camping area with 15 stands supplied with electricity. There is also a communal ablution facility to wash off the days dust.
